Houston Woman Accused of Fraudulently Filing Insurance Claims Exceeding $300,000

A Houston resident, Ariana York, is facing serious allegations of orchestrating a sophisticated scheme involving stolen personal information to file over $300,000 in fraudulent insurance claims. The stolen information reportedly included names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of 21 individuals. According to authorities, York submitted these fraudulent claims to three different insurance companies, leading to a significant financial loss.

York’s arrest in December marked the beginning of a complex investigation, with prosecutors continuously adding new charges to the case. Multiple agencies, such as the Texas Department of Insurance and the National Insurance Crime Bureau, are actively involved in the ongoing probe.

Additionally, York and an accomplice, Edmond Herron, are facing separate charges related to a different insurance fraud case. Prosecutors allege that between 2019 and 2022, the duo utilized fake IDs to secure new insurance policies, subsequently making fraudulent claims totaling over $133,000. Shockingly, investigations revealed that some of the vehicles supposedly involved in accidents were actually sitting idle on car lots during the alleged incidents.

Authorities highlighted instances where insurance companies unwittingly sent reimbursement checks to FBS Collision, a now-defunct business reportedly owned by Herron. This discovery further complicates the elaborate web of deceit and misrepresentation crafted by the accused individuals.

Tips to Safeguard Your Identity

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has issued crucial tips to help individuals protect their identities and avoid falling victim to fraudulent activities:

  • Shred or tear up personal financial documents before discarding them.
  • Avoid printing personal identifiers like social security numbers, dates of birth, or driver’s license numbers on checks.
  • Use your social security number only when absolutely necessary.

  • Verify the security of websites before sharing any personal information online (look for the padlock symbol in the browser window).
  • Exercise caution with emails requesting personal identifiers; always verify the sender’s authenticity before responding.
  • Refuse to disclose personal, financial, or identifying information to unknown callers, and verify their credentials with your insurer.

  • Monitor billing cycles to detect any irregularities or potential identity theft attempts.
  • Regularly review credit card and financial statements for unauthorized transactions.
  • Obtain a copy of your credit report annually to check for inaccuracies or suspicious activities.

  • Limit the number of credit cards and personal identification documents you carry, especially sensitive items like Social Security cards and passports.
  • Always inquire about the intended use of your information before disclosing it online or in person.
