Rescue Mission Launched After Fishing Vessel Capsizes

China and Taiwan came together to launch a joint rescue mission on Thursday after a fishing vessel from the mainland capsized overnight in waters between the mainland and the island nation. The tragic incident resulted in the death of two crew members, while the fate of the other two remains unknown.

Location of the Incident

The boat, identified as Min Long Yu 61222, sank at 2.58 a.m. in waters southwest of Dongding Island, which is part of the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen County. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, as reported by the Beijing-based daily Global Times.

Collaborative Rescue Efforts

Shortly after the incident, Chinese authorities reached out to the Taiwan Coast Guard for assistance. Taiwan promptly joined the rescue mission, demonstrating a collaborative effort between the two nations in times of crisis.

The fishermen involved in the incident are said to be from the Zhangzhou area of eastern China’s Fujian province. In response to the emergency, China mobilized six helicopters, sea rescue vessels, and patrol ships to conduct search and rescue missions within a radius of 37.4 kilometers.

Taiwan’s four vessels also joined the Chinese maritime authorities in the rescue operation. Despite the combined efforts, two crew members are still missing, adding to the urgency of the situation.

Previous Incidents in the Area

This tragic event comes on the heels of a similar incident a month prior, where two Chinese fishermen lost their lives in the same area. Tensions between China and Taiwan escalated as Beijing accused Taiwan of forcing the vessel out of waters, leading to its eventual sinking.

Apologies and Acknowledgment

Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling publicly apologized for the Coast Guard’s shortcomings in evidence collection during the fatal boat chase. Expressing deep sorrow and regret, Kuan addressed lawmakers on the island nation, emphasizing the need for improved coordination and response in maritime emergencies.

As the search continues for the missing crew members, both China and Taiwan remain committed to the joint rescue mission, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis.
