Driver sought in fatal hit-and-run in Miami

Authorities in Miami are on the lookout for a driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the tragic death of a man. The victim’s family is now pleading for the responsible motorist to come forward and face the consequences.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night at the intersection of Southwest Ninth Avenue and Eighth Street in Miami. According to City of Miami Police, the victim was crossing the road when he was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at the scene.

Footage from a nearby dashcam captured the 40-year-old victim crossing the street while distracted by what appeared to be a cellphone. After narrowly avoiding being hit by one car, the victim was struck by a second vehicle, sending him flying into the air before the driver fled the scene.

Witnesses in the area reacted with shock and horror, rushing to the victim’s aid. Tragically, the victim, identified as Tomas Brito, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Ryder Trauma Center by Miami Fire Rescue.

Heartbroken family seeks answers

Speaking to reporters, Brito’s family described him as a kind-hearted individual and expressed their devastation over his untimely passing. His mother, Dulce del Pino, tearfully appealed to the driver responsible to come forward.

“Tomas had a big heart and two children who are now without a father,” del Pino said. “We can’t understand why the driver didn’t stop.”

Family members are struggling to comprehend the callous actions of the hit-and-run driver. Katia Gonzalez, a relative, expressed disbelief at the driver’s lack of compassion.

“It’s unimaginable that someone could do this and then just drive away,” Gonzalez said.

Despite their grief, Brito’s loved ones hope that the driver will have a change of heart and take responsibility for their actions.

“I urge the person who took my son’s life to do the right thing and turn themselves in to the police,” del Pino pleaded.

Police close in on suspect vehicle

Investigators have identified a silver BMW abandoned near the crash site, matching the description of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. The car’s damages align with evidence from the scene, but the driver remains at large.

Miami Police Officer Michael Vega assured the public that it is only a matter of time before the driver is apprehended.

“With the vehicle in our possession and the damage consistent with the crash, we are close to making an arrest and charging the driver with felony offences,” Vega stated.

Had the driver remained at the scene, they would have likely avoided any legal repercussions, as the pedestrian was not on a designated sidewalk. However, by fleeing the scene and failing to assist the victim, the driver now faces serious charges.

Authorities urge anyone with information on the hit-and-run incident or the driver’s whereabouts to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to £5,000.
