At least 28 workers managed to escape unharmed by seeking refuge in a “safety pod” when the mine collapsed at Mount Clear around 4.50 pm. Unfortunately, falling rocks trapped two men, including a 21-year-old from Ballarat, who sustained life-threatening injuries to his lower body and had to be airlifted to a hospital.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to reach Hourigan, who was stuck approximately 500 metres underground and three kilometres from the mine’s entrance. Despite their best efforts, police confirmed his passing earlier today.
