Man Accused of Fatally Shooting Teenage Girl in Dayton

Authorities have charged a man with the shooting death of 15-year-old Heaven Washington in Dayton on the morning of November 17, 2023. Washington tragically succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the area of Turner Road and Philadelphia Avenue. Washington, who was under the temporary care of Montgomery County Children Services, was being driven by a group home staff member to withdraw money from an ATM for a school field trip when the incident occurred. As they headed back to the group home, a vehicle believed to be rented by the suspect, Moreland, pulled up alongside their car and fired several shots, leading to Washington’s untimely death.

Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. expressed outrage over the senseless act, stating, “This defendant tragically took the life of an innocent 15-year-old girl over a dispute he had with another individual. To compound the tragedy, he attempted to conceal his actions. He deserves to be incarcerated for life to prevent further harm to others.”

The accused, Moreland, is currently being held on a $1 million cash bail at the Montgomery County Jail.
