Ex-Warren Cops Scheduled for Hearings in Assault Case

Center Line — A district court judge in Center Line has set hearings for two former Warren police officers accused of assaulting a man during a traffic stop in July 2023.

Steven Bieda of 37th District Court scheduled a preliminary examination for Dammeon Player, 50, on May 8. Player is expected to appear in person for the hearing. Carlos Taylor, 28, will have his final pre-trial conference on June 5, with a trial date to be set during that hearing.

Both Player and Taylor appeared in court with their attorneys via Zoom. Avis Choulagh, Player’s defense attorney, is waiting for discovery from the prosecutor’s office. James Fifelski, Taylor’s defense attorney, is in discussions with prosecutors to resolve the case, which involves misdemeanor charges.

Player and Taylor allegedly assaulted a semi-truck driver in Center Line, outside their jurisdiction. Player was charged with felonious assault and willful failure to uphold the law as a public official. Taylor was charged with willful failure to uphold the law and assault and battery.

The city settled with the victim for $400,000. The case also sparked a dispute between Macomb County officials over the timing of the charges announcement.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido cited technical issues for the delay in announcing the charges, while County Executive Mark Hackel disputed this claim. Warren Mayor Lori Stone stated that public safety is a top priority for the city.
