Two Arrested in Upshur County Scam Attempting to Steal $30,000

In a bizarre turn of events in Bridgeport, W.Va, two individuals were arrested in Upshur County after attempting to steal $30,000 from a woman in a scam where they pretended to work for Chase Bank.

Suspicious Vehicle Call Leads to Arrest

The incident unfolded as police were responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area. Upon arrival, they spotted a man, later identified as Xianjin Yang, exiting the vehicle and attempting to flee from the authorities.

Scammers Pose as Chase Bank Employees

Upon apprehending Yang, police discovered that he had been working in conjunction with another individual named Shaotong Chen. The duo had convinced a local woman that they were employees of Chase Bank and were tasked with collecting money that she supposedly owed.

Woman Coerced into Handing Over $30,000

The woman had been instructed to bring a cardboard box covered in duct tape containing $30,000 to the scene, under the guise that this payment was necessary to secure her bank account. Court documents revealed that the scammers had convinced her that her computer was infected with a virus, and the money was required to rectify the situation.

Arrest and Bond Details

Xianjin Yang and Shaotong Chen are currently being held at TVRJ on bonds amounting to $1,000,000 each, as the investigation into this elaborate scam continues.
