CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The tragic incident that claimed the lives of two South Mecklenburg High School students in a multi-vehicle crash in South Charlotte has been attributed to a collision between a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta and a 2015 Western Star semi-truck. The students, identified as Kaia Hodge, 18, and Jada Cousins, 17, were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The driver of the semi-truck, a 63-year-old individual, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Atrium Health South Park for treatment, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Old Pineville Road and Tyvola Road shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday, March 8. Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit revealed that Hodge was traveling south on Old Pineville Road when the collision with the semi-truck occurred as it was making a left turn onto Tyvola Road.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools issued a statement expressing their profound sorrow over the loss of the two students and extended their condolences to the families and friends of Hodge and Cousins. Grief counseling services were made available to students and staff members in the wake of this tragic event.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and provide information by contacting CMPD Detective Sessoms at 704-432-2169, Ext. 3. No charges have been filed at this time.
