MONROE COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) – Sparta Man Pleads Guilty to Woman’s Death

Court proceedings in Monroe County, Wisconsin revealed that Shawn Hock, a 33-year-old man from Sparta, pleaded guilty on March 12 to first-degree reckless homicide in the tragic death of Sara Latimer in May 2022. This case has been marked by the grim spectre of domestic abuse.

Records from the court indicate that Hock, a repeat offender of domestic abuse, faced additional charges that were read in but ultimately dismissed. These included two counts of aggravated battery, domestic abuse as a repeat offender; two counts of disorderly conduct, domestic abuse as a repeat offender; possession of drug paraphernalia as a repeat offender; and manufacturing/delivery of amphetamine, less than or equal to three grams, as a repeat offender.

Hock’s sentencing is scheduled for June 26, 2024, where the court will consider the gravity of his actions and the impact on the victim’s family and community.

Investigation and Autopsy Details

The Sparta Police Department initiated an investigation on May 10, after the discovery of Sara Latimer’s lifeless body. She was later identified as a 32-year-old resident of Sparta. A preliminary autopsy report revealed that Latimer succumbed to blunt force trauma inflicted by multiple head and facial injuries, which manifested as extensive bruising and swelling. Additionally, Latimer exhibited defensive wounds on her arms and legs, indicative of a struggle for survival.

History of Violence

According to official documents, Hock had a troubling history of violence towards Latimer, with prior domestic abuse convictions in 2020 and 2021 where Latimer was the victim.
