The Incident

According to local reports, the wild elephant made its way onto the farm land, prompting Mathiya to attempt to scare it away by bursting crackers. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain as the elephant charged at him and trampled him to death. The elephant then stood guard over Mathiya’s body, preventing anyone from approaching him to render aid.

Response and Removal of the Body

Forest officials were eventually notified of the incident and were able to reach the spot after the elephant had moved on. They were able to remove Mathiya’s body from the scene, allowing for further investigation into the tragic event.

Increasing Man-Animal Conflict

Incidents like this highlight the growing concern of man-animal conflicts in various regions, particularly in the western ghat forest ranges that span across states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. As human populations continue to encroach on wildlife habitats, these encounters become more frequent and often result in devastating outcomes.

Authorities are working to address these issues and find ways to mitigate conflicts between humans and wild animals to prevent further tragedies like the one that befell Mathiya at the Satyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
