Knoxville Man Indicted on First-Degree Murder Charges in Mother’s Death

A Knoxville man, Zachary Justin Hayes, has been indicted on several charges including first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and aggravated cruelty to animals in connection with the death of his mother in September 2023. The indictment was handed down on March 4, 2024.

Discovery of the Crime

The tragic incident took place on September 8, 2023, when the Blount County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at a residence on Samples Road in Louisville. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of 63-year-old Kimberly Hayes, the mother of the suspect. Additionally, investigators found that a cat had also been fatally stabbed inside the home.

During the preliminary autopsy of Kimberly Hayes, it was revealed that she had sustained multiple stab wounds, indicating a violent homicide.

Arrest and Charges

Following their investigation, the sheriff’s office identified Zachary Justin Hayes as the prime suspect in his mother’s death. He was apprehended at his Knoxville residence by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Smoky Mountain Fugitive Task Force on September 9, 2023.
