Details of the Crash

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to the scene just before 7 a.m. on Friday, March 8, following reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival, they discovered a severely damaged 2016 Volkswagen Jetta and a 2015 Western Star semi-truck at the intersection. Tragically, two students from South Mecklenburg High School, identified as Kaia Hodge, 18, and Jada Cousins, 17, lost their lives in the crash. The driver of the semi-truck, a 63-year-old individual, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Atrium Health South Park for treatment.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit revealed that the preliminary findings indicate that Hodge was traveling south on Old Pineville Road when her vehicle collided with the semi-truck attempting to make a left turn onto Tyvola Road.
