Double Homicide Suspect Dejan Belnavis Captured in San Diego

WORCESTER — In a significant development, police confirmed that double homicide suspect Dejan Belnavis, 27, has been apprehended in San Diego, California at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday.

The arrest followed Worcester police’s release of new images of Belnavis, who was wanted in connection with the tragic murder of Chasity Nunez, 27, and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella Nunez, last week. To aid in his capture, authorities had increased the reward for any information leading to his arrest.

Belnavis had been identified as a suspect in the case and was wanted on charges of armed assault to murder and carrying a firearm without a license in relation to the double homicide incident.

The incident occurred on March 3 when Chasity and Zella Nunez were discovered shot in a parked vehicle following reports of gunfire in the vicinity of Lisbon Street and Englewood Avenue around 3 p.m. Both victims were rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to their injuries.

Subsequently, Worcester Police arrested Karel Mangual, 28, a resident of Sterling Street, in connection with the shooting. Mangual faced charges of armed assault to murder and carrying a firearm without a license and pleaded not guilty, ultimately being remanded in custody without bail.

Later that same evening, Belnavis was identified as a second suspect in the case.

According to court documents cited by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, surveillance footage captured two individuals approaching the mother and daughter in their vehicle and opening fire. The suspects then fled back to a white sedan, believed to have been borrowed by Belnavis, which was later located in Hartford, Connecticut.
