American Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Rape and Murder near Neuschwanstein Castle

By Nadine Schmidt, CNN

Berlin (CNN) — An American man has been handed a life sentence by a German court for the heinous crimes of rape and murder near Neuschwanstein Castle, a popular tourist attraction in Germany.

The convicted man, 31-year-old Troy B. from Michigan, was found guilty of the brutal attack on two American women, Eva Liu and Kelsey Chang, both hailing from Illinois. The incident took place near the historic Marienbrücke bridge, a viewpoint for the picturesque Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.

Details of the Attack

The tragic event unfolded on June 14, 2023, when Troy B. approached Liu and Chang, who were tourists visiting the area. Pretending to befriend them, he led them away from the main path with the promise of a better view. Once isolated, he launched a vicious assault on the unsuspecting women.

Liu, aged 21, was the first victim of the attack. When Chang, 22, tried to intervene, she was forcefully pushed down a slope. Troy B. then proceeded to strangle Liu and commit the heinous act of rape. Subsequently, he threw her down the slope after being interrupted by other tourists who stumbled upon the scene.

Following the rescue efforts by the Füssen mountain rescue service, Liu was airlifted to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Meanwhile, Troy B. was apprehended by the authorities near the site of the crime.

Court Verdict and Sentencing

During the sentencing at the court in Kempten, Judge Christoph Schwiebacher emphasized the severity of the offense, deeming it one of “particular gravity.” As a result, Troy B. was handed a life sentence with no possibility of automatic parole after 15 years, which is the norm in Germany.

Alexander Stevens, the lawyer representing Troy B., addressed the media following the verdict. He indicated that the defendant may have to serve his sentence in a prison in Straubing, Germany, unless an extradition request is made by the USA or by the defendant himself.

Stevens mentioned, “Our client is yet to decide whether to appeal the court’s decision.”
