Marine Murder Victim Identified Decades After Body Discovered in Florida
The remains of a murder victim found in northern Florida over 43 years ago have finally been identified, thanks to advanced DNA testing and forensic genealogy. William Irving Monroe III, a United States Marine who served in Vietnam, was identified as the victim whose body was discovered partially buried in a hole in Pomona Park in December 1980.
Putnam County Sheriff Homer “Gator” DeLoach announced the breakthrough during a news conference, revealing that Monroe had sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, blunt force trauma to the chest, and a hairline fracture at the base of his skull. Despite initial investigations treating the case as a homicide, authorities struggled to identify Monroe until recent advancements in forensic technology.
Monroe, a father of two, was last seen alive on November 15, 1980, and is believed to have died two to three weeks before his body was discovered. He had ties to Putnam County and was known to have been in the Orlando area around the time of his death. However, his family was unaware of his whereabouts, and there was no record of him after 1979.
The breakthrough in identifying Monroe came in 2023 when Captain Chris Stallings resubmitted evidence samples for testing, leading to a connection with Monroe’s relatives. His brother, Richard Monroe, provided the final DNA sample that confirmed the victim’s identity.

While the identification of Monroe’s remains marks a significant step forward in the case, authorities are still seeking information to identify his killer. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with relevant information to come forward, with Crime Stoppers offering a reward for tips.
DeLoach expressed a mix of relief and sadness for Monroe’s family, who now have closure and the opportunity to properly memorialize their loved one. The sheriff emphasised the importance of continuing the investigation to bring justice to Monroe and his family.
