Sheldon Johnson, a previously incarcerated advocate for criminal justice reform, has been taken into custody on charges of murder following the discovery of body parts in his residence in New York City.
Sheldon Johnson, a former convict who had been actively involved in advocating for reforms within the criminal justice system, has been arrested in New York City on suspicion of murder after human remains were found in his freezer.
The victim has been identified as Collin Small, a 44-year-old individual. The grisly discovery of Small’s body parts occurred during a police search of Johnson’s home in the Bronx as part of a welfare check. Johnson, who had previously served time in prison, was apprehended on March 7 and faces charges including second-degree murder, manslaughter, and illegal possession of a weapon, according to a report by USA Today.
Authorities found Small’s torso in Johnson’s apartment on the evening of March 5. Reports from CBS New York indicated that Small had been shot and then decapitated and dismembered. Other body parts, including his head, were located in Johnson’s freezer. Upon exiting the police station, Johnson maintained his innocence in front of a group of journalists.
Prior to his arrest, Johnson had been vocal about his efforts in advocating for criminal justice reform following his release from incarceration. He had appeared on various platforms, including the “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast alongside civil rights lawyer Josh Dubin.
During the podcast, Johnson discussed his journey towards reform while serving a 25-year sentence for attempted murder and robbery in 1999.
“I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I couldn’t continue down that path,” Johnson expressed during his conversation on the podcast. “I had a family, I had children, and I didn’t want to be remembered as a notorious figure. I wanted to be a better father for my son.”
Johnson is currently being held in custody without the option for bail. After his release from prison in May 2023, he had been actively involved in mentoring at-risk youth at the Queens Defenders organization in New York. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 11.
As of now, Joe Rogan has not provided any comments on the situation.
