On a sunny Sunday afternoon, a devastating incident unfolded on Interstate 75, just south of Lake City. A 32-year-old man from Lake City found himself in a harrowing situation that would change lives forever.

The Erratic Driving
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the 32-year-old man was driving erratically while heading south on I-75 near mile marker 418. His reckless driving led to a collision with another vehicle, driven by a 57-year-old man from Dunnellon.
The Collision and Tragic Outcome
The collision caused the man’s pickup truck to overturn and tragically strike a tree on the side of the interstate. One passenger, a 28-year-old man from Lake City, lost his life in the crash. Another passenger, whose age remains unknown, was rushed to UF Health Shands in Gainesville in serious condition.
The Suspect Flees
In a shocking turn of events, the driver of the overturned pickup, later identified as Sergio Diaz-Ortiz, fled the scene into a nearby wooded area. Despite sustaining minor injuries, Diaz-Ortiz was apprehended by law enforcement and is now facing serious charges.
The Aftermath
As the investigation unfolds, the driver of the second pickup and his passenger, a 51-year-old woman from Dunnellon, emerged unscathed from the incident. The community is left reeling from the tragic events that transpired on that fateful day on Interstate 75.
