Details of the Shootout

Sheriff Darren Campbell of Iredell County disclosed in a social media post that Justin Michael Strawser, clad in a bulletproof vest, engaged in a gun battle with deputies and was fatally shot on Saturday outside a house in Mooresville. Fortunately, the deputies and four minor children inside the residence with Strawser emerged unscathed.

Following a report of shots fired at a different Mooresville home, deputies arrived to find two individuals deceased inside the property and a third person critically injured on the back porch. All three victims were found bound and restrained, with the injured individual rushed to the hospital in critical condition, Sheriff Campbell confirmed.

Possible Motives Unveiled

The sheriff’s office disclosed that Strawser and the three victims were acquainted with each other, dispelling the notion of a random home invasion. Narcotics and robbery are being considered as potential motives behind the tragic incident, the office added.

Information pertaining to Strawser led deputies to approach the second house, where Strawser barricaded himself and began firing at them using an AR-15 rifle, as per the sheriff’s account.

Deputies’ Negotiations and Resolution

With the residence surrounded, sheriff’s office negotiators made attempts to coax Strawser out of the house. However, the four juvenile occupants inside proved uncooperative and declined rescue efforts, Sheriff Campbell noted.

Strawser’s shots struck sheriff’s office vehicles, and during negotiations, he admitted to his involvement in the fatal incident at the initial house, the sheriff disclosed.

Subsequently, deputies deployed tear gas, prompting the children to flee the property followed by Strawser, who emerged wearing the bulletproof vest and firing at the deputies. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Strawser was fatally shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation and Administrative Action

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of probing the shooting incident, with three deputies placed on administrative leave in line with the sheriff’s office’s standard protocol.

The victims at the first house were identified as two men aged 22 and 24, adding to the tragedy that unfolded in Mooresville, North Carolina.
