Man Arrested in Hit-and-Run Incident on Mass Ave

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The suspect involved in a tragic hit-and-run incident on Mass Ave that claimed the life of one individual and left two others injured initially reported the damage to his vehicle as an act of vandalism.

Arrest of Salvador Banales

Salvador Banales, a 27-year-old man from Houston, Texas, was apprehended by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department at the Indianapolis airport following the incident on Saturday afternoon.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, IMPD officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run at the intersection of Massachusetts and College avenues involving three individuals. The victims were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Evidence Uncovered

A probable cause affidavit obtained by News 8 revealed that security footage from a nearby establishment captured a red Mustang, believed to be a 2020 – 2022 model, travelling at high speed southbound on College Avenue. The vehicle struck the victims before continuing its journey without stopping.

Investigators at the scene recovered a passenger-side rearview mirror belonging to the Mustang, further linking the vehicle to the hit-and-run.

Police Response

Following the incident, an IMPD officer was called to investigate a vehicle vandalism case at a hotel near the airport. Salvador Banales, the suspect, reported that his rental vehicle, a red Mustang, had likely been damaged the previous night.

Upon closer inspection, the officer noticed the proximity of the alleged vandalism site to the scene of the hit-and-run and observed that the vehicle appeared significantly damaged compared to Banales’ description.

Arrest and Confession

Subsequent discussions with detectives confirmed Banales as a suspect in the hit-and-run case. Airport authorities and the rental company associated with the vehicle were contacted, leading to Banales’ arrest as he attempted to board a flight back to Texas.

During questioning, Banales admitted to being in town for a work convention and visiting local establishments before the incident occurred. He confessed to hitting something on his way back to the hotel, expressing fear and panic as reasons for fleeing the scene.

Legal Proceedings

Banales is currently facing charges for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death or serious bodily injury, causing catastrophic injury while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, and providing false information. He is being held at the Marion County jail without bond, with a court date pending.
