INDIANAPOLIS – A suspect in a deadly hit-and-run crash in downtown Indianapolis was just about to board a flight home to Texas when police took him into custody.

Salvador Banales, 27, faces multiple charges in connection with the hit-and-run crash that occurred in the early hours of Saturday near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and North College Avenue. The incident resulted in the death of 27-year-old Brandon Breedlove and left two others injured.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found three pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle. Breedlove was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. One victim sustained a suspected concussion, while the third victim suffered a minor hand injury, according to court documents.

Identification of the Suspect

Investigators were able to identify the suspect vehicle, a red 2020-2022 Ford Mustang, through debris found at the scene and surveillance footage from a nearby business. The footage showed the car traveling at a high rate of speed and striking the victims before fleeing the scene without stopping.

Authorities were led to Banales after he reported his rental car, a 2022 Ford Mustang, had been vandalized or side-swiped while he was at a bar. The proximity of the damaged vehicle to the hit-and-run scene raised suspicions, prompting further investigation.

Police managed to track down Banales at the Indianapolis International Airport, where he was preparing to board a flight to Houston, Texas. During questioning, Banales admitted to being involved in the hit-and-run incident. He confessed to fleeing the scene out of fear and panic, acknowledging that he should have stopped.

Despite claiming to have consumed only three beers several hours prior to the crash, Banales displayed signs of alcohol intoxication during the interview. Subsequent examination of the rental car revealed evidence consistent with the hit-and-run, including human tissue and blood on the vehicle.
