22-Year-Old Man Granted Release in Migrant Tragedy off Cyprus

A 22-year-old man who was arrested on charges of manslaughter following a migrant tragedy off the coast of Cyprus has been granted release. The incident resulted in the death of a six-year-old boy and the disappearance of three individuals.

According to reports by philenews, survivors of the boat, which had been adrift for nine days, provided testimonies indicating that the 22-year-old man was not the navigator of the vessel as initially suspected by the police.

The migrants claimed that the actual navigator was among the three individuals who jumped into the water in an attempt to seek help and are currently missing. After reviewing the testimonies, the case file was forwarded to the Law Office, and instructions were given to release the 22-year-old man.

The young Syrian man was released on Friday and taken to the Pournara Reception Centre along with the other 30 migrants who were on board the boat. Legal proceedings will only proceed if the person identified as the navigator is found alive.

Survivor Testimonies

All survivors confirmed the account of the six-year-old boy’s father, who stated that his child passed away on February 28, and his body was wrapped in a blanket and thrown into the sea. Following this tragic event, three men from the boat attempted to reach land using improvised means to bring help but unfortunately went missing.

Despite the efforts of the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, the missing individuals could not be located. The migrants revealed that they had paid between 2,500-3,000 euros to smugglers for transportation to Cyprus. They embarked on their journey from the coast on the border of Syria and Lebanon.

Harsh Conditions at Sea

The survivors reported that due to bad weather conditions, the boat became unmanageable, leading to the depletion of fuel, food, and water. In a desperate attempt to survive, they resorted to drinking seawater. One 36-year-old man remains hospitalised in serious condition with hypernatremia at Nicosia Hospital.

The boat carrying the migrants set sail on February 20 and was located on February 29, 58 nautical miles off the coast of Cyprus. After a successful rescue operation, 31 people were saved from the perilous situation.
