Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Kelowna Man in Kananaskis

A devastating incident unfolded in the backcountry east of the Mount Engadine Lodge on Tower Peak in Kananaskis, where a 19-year-old man from Kelowna lost his life in a tragic avalanche. The victim, whose identity has been revealed as a young man from Kelowna, was buried under snow following the avalanche.

The Canmore RCMP received a distress call about the avalanche at approximately 1 p.m. on March 10. The incident occurred while two men were skiing in the area, with one managing to extricate himself from the snow by digging his way out. However, his companion was not as fortunate and was tragically buried beneath the snow.

Efforts were immediately launched to locate and rescue the buried individual, with the RCMP and Kananaskis Mountain Rescue teams working tirelessly. Tragically, the body of the young man was recovered the following day, just before 10 a.m. on March 11.

The incident has prompted authorities to issue a special public avalanche warning for the region, with intermittent closures in place for areas of Kananaskis Country as controlled avalanche measures are undertaken using explosives. Avalanche Canada has classified the current snowpack conditions as “tricky”, with several recent incidents of skiers triggering avalanches in the area.

The danger rating for the Canmore area extending into British Columbia, including Revelstoke, is currently deemed considerable. In light of these hazardous conditions, Avalanche Canada advises individuals to consult their website, avalanche.ca, for updated information on weather and terrain conditions before embarking on any winter activities in the backcountry.
