Body of Man Found at Historic Bed and Breakfast Site in Bergen County

Authorities in Bergen County have confirmed the identity of a man whose body was discovered at the site of a historic bed and breakfast that was destroyed in a fire earlier this week.

The Toddle Inn, located at 850 Broad Avenue in Ridgefield, was engulfed in flames on Wednesday morning, just two weeks before it was scheduled to be demolished. After the fire was extinguished, a search of the rubble revealed the body of a man, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

The man has been identified as 42-year-old Xavier Contreras. Officials are still investigating whether Contreras perished in the fire or if his body was already inside the building before the blaze broke out.

Prior to the fire, the inn, which is believed to be over a century old, was vacant and had no electricity or gas. The windows were boarded up, as reported by NorthJersey.com.

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday and managed to extinguish the blaze within an hour, authorities stated.

The Toddle Inn was previously owned by Councilman Angus Todd, who passed away in 2020. The property has since changed hands and is slated for redevelopment, according to NorthJersey.com.
