Tragic boat capsizing incident in Sungai Batang Baleh, Kapit division

A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday when a longboat capsized in Sungai Batang Baleh in Kapit division, leaving four individuals missing. The search operation for the missing victims took a grim turn today when three bodies were discovered, shedding light on the severity of the situation.

Discovery of the victims

The search and rescue team found two of the victims, Sgt Jonathan Lambert, 51, and Jack Balan, 45, in separate locations. Sgt Jonathan’s body was found floating near the Kapit express boat terminal, while Jack Balan was discovered in the waters of Pulau Kerto, Sibu, over 100km away from the site of the incident. Both bodies were identified and handed over to the authorities for further action.

The third body was found by the public in the waters near Bintangor but drifted away before being located in Batang Lebaan, nearly 200km away by a marine police team. The search operation was temporarily halted for the day, with one victim still unaccounted for.

Unfolding tragedy

The boat capsizing incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with five individuals on board at the time of the accident. Among them were two police personnel, Sgt Jonathan Lambet, and Constable Iskandar Ibrahim, as well as civilians Amerson John Nain, Jack Balan, and Moses Ngui. Fortunately, Moses Ngui was rescued by the public when the boat capsized, but the fate of the other victims remains uncertain.
