Search Operation for Missing Victims of Capsized Longboat Yields Three Bodies in Sungai Batang Baleh

SIBU: A tragic incident unfolded in Sungai Batang Baleh in Kapit division when a longboat capsized, leaving four victims missing. Today, the search operation yielded three bodies, bringing closure to the families of the deceased.

Discovery of Bodies

The search operation led to the discovery of three bodies, with two victims found over 100 kilometres away from the location of the incident. Sgt Jonathan Lambert, aged 51, was found floating near the Kapit express boat terminal at 4.02 pm. His body, along with his pistol, was handed over to the police for further action. The second victim, Jack Balan, aged 45, was found in the waters of Pulau Kerto, Sibu. He was identified by his wife before being sent to Sibu Hospital for further procedures.

The third body was discovered by the public in the waters near Bintangor but drifted away. It was later found in Batang Lebaan, nearly 200 km away by a marine police team at around 5 pm. The search operation was suspended at 6.30 pm, with one victim still missing.

Details of Incident

The longboat capsized on Thursday afternoon, carrying five individuals, including two police personnel from the Kapit district police headquarters, Sgt Jonathan Lambet and Constable Iskandar Ibrahim. The civilians on board were Amerson John Nain, aged 47, Jack Balan, aged 45, and Moses Ngui, aged 47, who was rescued by the public when the boat capsized.

As the community mourns the loss of the victims, the search operation continues in hopes of finding the remaining missing individual and providing closure to their loved ones.
