Woman Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning One-Year-Old Daughter in Lagos

A woman, known only as Rukayat, has been taken into police custody in Lagos State for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter with an insecticide in the Oworonshoki area.

The disturbing incident took place around 11 a.m. on a Friday, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to a police source, the infant had been suffering from epilepsy, and the mother reportedly decided to poison her out of frustration with the circumstances.

“Rukayat brought her one-year-old, seven-month-old daughter to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for treatment. Later that same day, she confessed to having poisoned her child with an insecticide because she could not cope with her daughter’s epilepsy. She expressed a desire to find relief from the stress,” the source revealed.

When contacted, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and stated that the mother has been apprehended, with investigations currently underway.

“Detectives from the division were promptly dispatched to the hospital, where they found the baby receiving treatment. The mother has been taken into custody following her treatment, and the investigation is ongoing,” Hundeyin said.

This tragic event serves as a chilling reminder of a similar incident from last year. The Lagos State Police Command had previously reported the death of a 39-year-old woman, Lilian Nwarache, who consumed an insecticide in the Iwaya area of Lagos due to frustration with her illness.
