Seattle Man Sentenced to Over Three Years in Prison for Mail Vehicle and Mail Key Thefts

A Seattle man, Johny Mixayboua, has been sentenced to 41 months in prison for a series of thefts involving postal vehicles, postal keys, and mail. The U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed that Mixayboua’s crimes led to a halt in mail deliveries in the zip code 98118 for approximately a week.

Series of Thefts

The incidents began on December 28, 2022, when a U.S. Postal Service vehicle was stolen in the Rainier View neighborhood. This vehicle contained a postal key that was used to access cluster mailbox units in the area. Following the theft, multiple reports emerged of opened and stolen mail, along with stolen credit cards.

Neighbours reported their credit cards being stolen, which were later used by Mixayboua. Surveillance footage from the cluster mailboxes and stores where the stolen cards were used helped police identify him as the suspect.

On January 17, 2023, two more Postal Service vehicles were stolen in the Alki neighborhood, with Mixayboua once again stealing mail and attempting to use the stolen credit cards. Another postal service vehicle was stolen on January 30, 2023, in South Seattle, where Mixayboua was once again identified as the suspect.

Continued Thefts

The thefts continued into late January and February in the Snoqualmie area, and throughout April, mail thefts extended as far north as Lake Forest Park and as far south as southeast Seattle. Mixayboua was living in a vehicle near a relative’s home when he was finally arrested after attempting to evade officers.

During his arrest, law enforcement discovered a Polymer unregistered firearm, commonly known as a “ghost gun,” that Mixayboua had discarded while running from police.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard A. Jones, during the sentencing hearing, expressed disappointment in Mixayboua’s actions, highlighting the widespread hardship caused by his thefts. U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman also condemned the thefts, emphasizing the harm caused to individuals, especially the elderly and disabled, who relied on the mail for essential items.
