Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Barrhaven Tragedy

A candlelight vigil is set to take place on Saturday in Palmadeo Park in Barrhaven to honour the memory of the six victims who tragically lost their lives on Wednesday night. The vigil is being held near the family home on Berrigan Drive where the devastating incident occurred.

Details of the Tragedy

The victims of the Barrhaven tragedy have been identified as 35-year-old Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake and her four children – Kelly, Ranaya, Ashwini, and Inuka. Additionally, 40-year-old family acquaintance Gamini Amarakoon Amarakoon Mudiyanselage was also found deceased at the scene.

The suspect, a 19-year-old international student who was living with the family, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Police are currently investigating whether one or multiple knives were used in the attack.

Community Support

The surviving father, Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, is currently recovering in hospital. According to Bhante Suneetha, resident monk at the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery, Wickramasinghe is in a state of shock following the tragic events.

Suneetha visited Wickramasinghe in hospital and described the injuries he sustained during the attack. The father, who had welcomed the suspect to stay in his basement, suffered severe injuries including the loss of half a finger and damage to his face.

Family Background

The Wickramasinghe family were newcomers to Canada from Sri Lanka. Dhanushka Wickramasinghe initially came to Canada as a student at Algonquin College and later brought his family to join him in the country.

Inuka, the eldest Wickramasinghe child, was enrolled in classes at the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery. Suneetha described Inuka as a bright and courageous young boy with a promising future.

Ottawa police are continuing their investigation into the tragic events that unfolded in Barrhaven. The community has come together to mourn the loss of the victims and offer support to the surviving family members during this difficult time.
