The heckler, identified as 51-year-old Steven Nikoui, shouted “Abbey Gate!” before he was escorted out of the gallery by police. Nikoui’s son, U.S. Marine Kareem Nikoui, was tragically killed in a suicide bombing at Abbey Gate outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2021.

According to a statement from the U.S. Capitol Police, the man was arrested for disrupting the State of the Union Address, as it is illegal to demonstrate in Congressional buildings. The Biden administration has faced criticism for the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan during his first year in office.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 10:15 p.m., the disruption occurred during President Biden’s speech. Despite warnings from officers to stop, Nikoui continued to yell until he was removed from the House Galleries and arrested for crowding, obstructing, or incommoding under D.C. law.

After being led out of the gallery, Steven Nikoui was seen in handcuffs as he was taken into custody by Capitol Police officers. The incident highlighted the emotional impact of the tragic loss suffered by Nikoui’s family and the broader implications of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan.
