South Carolina man charged with breaking into Rowan home via cat door

A South Carolina resident has been taken into custody by law enforcement after allegedly breaking into a residential property in Rowan County through a cat door.

Authorities were alerted to the incident at around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when residents of a house on Erskine Drive reported a recent break-in, as stated by a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, the homeowners informed deputies that they had discovered an individual on their front porch following a sudden power outage in their bedroom. The male resident attempted to engage the intruder in conversation, but the individual responded with nonsensical dialogue.

The suspect then drove to a neighbouring driveway before returning to the victims’ property on two occasions, seemingly attempting to approach the residence. The homeowners noticed signs indicating that the individual had entered the house through the cat door, with his hat left in front of the entrance.

Subsequently, another deputy intercepted and identified the suspect at the junction of Highway 29 and Bostian Road shortly after receiving the dispatch. The man, identified as 27-year-old Jimmy Lee Spann, was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and larceny following the break-in. During the arrest, a stolen white TV remote was discovered on Spann’s person.

Spann was remanded to the Rowan County Detention Center and assigned a bond of $100,000.

According to police records, Spann is registered as a resident of Gaffney, South Carolina.
