19-Year-Old Sri Lankan Student Arrested After Mass Killing in Ottawa

A shocking incident unfolded in Ottawa, Canada, on Wednesday night as police discovered the bodies of a mother, her four young children, and a family acquaintance at a residence in the suburb of Barrhaven. The 19-year-old suspect, Febrio De-Zoysa, has been arrested in connection with the mass killing that has left the community reeling.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to Ottawa police, two 911 calls were made at 10:52 p.m. reporting a man yelling and asking for help on Berrigan Drive. Officers responded swiftly and apprehended De-Zoysa without any resistance. Upon entering the home, they found the six deceased victims, described as a family and an acquaintance, all of whom were newcomers to Canada and originally from Sri Lanka.

The victims were identified as Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, 35, and her four children: 7-year-old boy Inuka Wickramasinghe, 4-year-old girl Ashwini Wickramasinghe, 2-year-old girl Rinyana Wickramasinghe, and 2-month-old Kelly Wickramasinghe. The family acquaintance, Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, 40, was also found among the deceased.

Suspect Charged with First-Degree Murder

De-Zoysa, a Sri Lankan national believed to be a student in Canada, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Chief Eric Stubbs confirmed that De-Zoysa was living in the same residence as the victims and is the sole suspect in the case. There is no ongoing threat to public safety, according to authorities.
