The Tragic Stabbing Incident in Ottawa: Sri Lankan Student Charged with Killing Six People

Authorities in Ottawa, Canada, were left reeling after a horrific incident that resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including a 2 1/2-month-old baby girl, at the hands of a 19-year-old Sri Lankan student. The suspect, identified as Febrio De-Zoysa, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Details of the Incident

Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs revealed that the victims were Sri Lankan nationals who had recently immigrated to Canada. Among the deceased were a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, and the infant girl. Additionally, a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family was also tragically killed in the incident.

According to reports, the police were alerted to the scene when the father of the family, who survived the attack with serious injuries, was seen outside the home screaming for help. Emergency calls were placed at 10:52 pm on Wednesday night.

Community Shock and Grief

Neighbours of the family expressed shock and disbelief at the senseless act of violence that had taken place in their community. Don Perera, a neighbour, recalled meeting the family at a Halloween party and described the father as being from Sri Lanka.

Shanti Ramesh, another neighbour, witnessed the aftermath of the incident and described the chaotic scene that unfolded late Wednesday night. The community was left reeling as news of the tragedy spread.

Official Responses

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe both expressed their condolences and solidarity with the affected families. Trudeau called the incident “shocking and horrifying,” while Sutcliffe described it as “devastating and heartbreaking” for the entire city.

The case has been adjourned until March 13 to allow the suspect time to secure legal representation. Police have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to public safety in the area.

The victims of the tragedy have been identified as Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, the 35-year-old mother; Inuka Wickramasinghe, a 7-year-old boy; Ashwini Wickramasinghe, a 4-year-old daughter; Rinyana Wickramasinghe, a 2-year-old daughter; Kelly Wickramasinghe, the 2 1/2-month-old baby girl; and Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family.

As the community mourns the loss of these innocent lives, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
