Tragic Incident Unfolds in Ottawa

A horrifying incident took place in Ottawa, where a 19-year-old student from Sri Lanka stands accused of stabbing and killing six people he lived with, including four children from a Sri Lankan family. The suspect, identified as Febrio De-Zoysa, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Details of the Tragedy

Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs revealed that an “edged weapon” or “knife-like object” was used in the attack. The victims, who recently arrived in Canada, include a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, a 2½-month-old baby girl, and a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family. The father of the family was found outside the home, shouting for help when police arrived.

Community in Shock

Neighbours expressed shock and disbelief at the tragic turn of events. Don Perera, a neighbour, had met the family at a Halloween party and described the father as being from Sri Lanka. Shanti Ramesh, another neighbour, witnessed the commotion and saw police officers carrying the distressed father away from the scene.

Police were alerted to the incident just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday night and swiftly apprehended the suspect. Authorities assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to safety in the area. The community has been left reeling from the senseless act of violence.
