Laurens Man Receives Prison Sentence for Brutal Assault

LAURENS, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Solicitor David Stumbo announced that Marcus Tyrone Grant, a 46-year-old man from Laurens, has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a violent attack on another man suspected of being a police informant.

Details of the Assault

According to Stumbo, Grant was found guilty of assault and battery by a mob as well as kidnapping. The incident took place in January of 2021, when the Laurens Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex on Spring Street. The victim, Jarius Byrd, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Byrd had been assaulted by a group of five men, including Grant. Byrd was held captive at gunpoint in his own apartment, where Grant proceeded to physically assault him. Grant repeatedly stomped on Byrd, causing severe injuries.

Motive Behind the Attack

Authorities determined that the motive for the attack stemmed from Byrd’s past involvement as a police informant in 2010, which led to Grant’s arrest and subsequent conviction on narcotics charges. This history of animosity played a significant role in the violent assault.
