North Wilkesboro Commissioners Approve Resolution for Downtown Municipal Service District
In a recent meeting, the North Wilkesboro commissioners unanimously approved a resolution that would authorize town staff to explore the possibility of creating a downtown municipal service district. Resolution Details
During the meeting, Taylor Gann, the community development director for the town, presented the concept of establishing a municipal service district. The goal of this district would be to fund projects such as streetscape and sidewalk upgrades, park improvements, as well as marketing and business promotions that directly benefit properties within the district.
While the specific additional tax rate has not been determined yet, Commissioner Andrew Palmer mentioned a potential starting point of 12 cents per $100 of property valuation. The town is looking to raise between $50,000 to $75,000 per year through this tax.
Challenges and Considerations
Commissioner Palmer expressed concerns about the timing of implementing this additional tax, especially with the county government soon to implement new and higher property tax values through revaluation. The county officials have stated that property values could increase by an average of more than 30%, making the financial landscape uncertain.
Despite these challenges, Commissioner Angela Day highlighted the need for improvements in downtown North Wilkesboro, emphasizing that other towns like Elkin have successfully implemented municipal service districts. Mayor Marc Hauser also voiced his support for the establishment of the district, acknowledging the tight budget constraints faced by the town.
