MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KFVS) – Man Fatally Hit After Altercation in Alleyway

Authorities in Mount Vernon, Illinois, are investigating a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man following a disagreement on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mount Vernon Police Department received a distress call shortly after 4:30 p.m. reporting a man being struck by a vehicle in the 2800 block of Veterans Memorial Drive.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the injured man in an alleyway and promptly transported him to a nearby hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

It was reported that the driver involved in the incident had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. However, the individual, identified as 45-year-old Robert A. Lewis, later turned himself in at the Mount Vernon Police Department.

Based on preliminary investigations, it was revealed that the fatal altercation occurred while the 62-year-old victim was working on a vehicle in the alleyway. A verbal dispute ensued between the victim and Lewis, resulting in damage to both parties’ vehicles.

As Lewis was departing the scene, his truck collided with the victim, leading to the fatal outcome.

Robert A. Lewis was subsequently arrested and taken into custody at the Jefferson County Justice Center on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide.

Authorities have indicated that the charges against Lewis may be subject to revision as the investigation progresses and additional evidence is analysed.
