Hyderabad Man Allegedly Forced to Fight Alongside Russian Military Killed in Ukraine Conflict

A tragic incident has come to light as a Hyderabad man, Mohammed Asfan, was reportedly forced to fight alongside the Russian military in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and has been killed, as reported by India Today.

The Indian embassy in Moscow confirmed Asfan’s death, but did not provide details on the circumstances surrounding it. They are currently in touch with his family and Russian authorities to make arrangements to bring his mortal remains back to India.

Prior to his death, Asfan’s family had reached out to Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi seeking assistance in repatriating him from Russia.

This unfortunate incident comes amidst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, resulting in the deadliest conflict Europe has seen since World War II. Asfan is the second Indian known to have lost his life in Russia during the ongoing violence.

Previously, a 23-year-old man from Gujarat, Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya, was killed in an alleged Ukrainian air strike in Donetsk on the Russia-Ukraine border. Mangukiya had been hired as an “army security helper” in Russia.

Reports have indicated that around 100 Indians have been recruited by the Russian military in the past year, with some being coerced into fighting alongside Russian forces instead of their intended roles as security helpers.

India’s External Affairs Ministry has stated that several Indians have been discharged from the Russian Army due to their forced involvement in combat. Efforts are underway to secure the release of at least 20 Indian nationals who are currently stranded in Russia.

In a recent development, a group of seven more Indians stranded in Russia, including individuals from Punjab and Haryana, released videos seeking the government’s assistance in returning to India.
