Connecticut Officer-Involved Shooting Bodycam Footage Released

BOLTON, Conn. — The Connecticut Office of Inspector General has made public the body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting in Bolton that took place on March 1.

The Connecticut State Police were called to a residence on Meadow Road in Bolton at approximately 2:15 p.m. last Friday after receiving reports of a man in distress. The man, identified as 29-year-old Maxim Nowak, was reportedly in a mental health crisis, threatening self-harm and others while brandishing a knife, according to Inspector General Robert Devlin’s report.

Responding troopers Wendy Garcia-Campos, Doug Bernier, and Brian Contenta from Troop K encountered Nowak in the main hallway of the residence, where Contenta’s bodycam footage captured the events that unfolded.

Despite repeated attempts by the troopers to persuade Nowak to drop the knives, he remained unresponsive. “Relax Maxwell come on buddy,” Contenta can be heard saying on the bodycam footage. The situation escalated as Nowak refused to comply with their commands.

Nowak’s father, also present at the scene, pleaded with his son to cooperate, but Nowak’s agitation continued to grow. In a tense moment, Bernier deployed his Taser while Contenta discharged his firearm multiple times, striking Nowak.

Following the altercation, troopers and EMS provided immediate medical attention to Nowak on-site before he was transported to Hartford Hospital. His current condition remains unknown as he receives medical care.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, spearheaded by the Office of the Inspector General in collaboration with the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad and the Tolland Judicial District State’s Attorney’s Office.
