RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT/Gray News): Virginia Family Devastated by Tragic Shooting Incident

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a Virginia family is reeling from the loss of their beloved family member, Derrit Banks, who was tragically shot and killed in a confrontation with their neighbour in Richmond.

The devastating incident unfolded when Banks, known affectionately as Pete, returned home from work one Sunday evening to a chilling revelation from his 10-year-old grandson, Mi’King. According to WWBT, Mi’King disclosed that their neighbour had been flaunting a gun to him and other children, sparking a series of events that would end in tragedy.

The 55-year-old Banks courageously confronted his neighbour, identified as 49-year-old Jermorrie Simmons by the police. Tensions escalated rapidly, leading to a physical altercation, during which Simmons brandished the very gun he had been showing the children.

Mi’King recounted the harrowing moments, “He got mad and throwed punches at my papa, and then, that’s when they shot him. He came into the bathroom, laying on the ground, and I was holding him in my arms, telling him, ‘Papa, no, don’t die on me! Don’t die on me, Papa. Don’t die on me.’ By the time I know it, he gone.”

The family of Banks is grappling with the senseless loss of their cherished family member. Celestine Harvey, Banks’ sister-in-law, expressed the disbelief and pain, “It just don’t seem real. It seems like a dream, a bad one.”

Mi’King echoed the sentiments, “It’s impossible for me. Nobody has ever died in my arms before.” The traumatic experience has left him and his 2-year-old brother covered in Banks’ blood.
