A family in Richmond, Virginia, is reeling from the tragic loss of their beloved family member, Derrit Banks, who was allegedly shot and killed in a confrontation with their neighbour. The incident has left the family devastated and grappling with the senseless act of gun violence.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded when Banks, affectionately known as Pete, returned home from work one Sunday evening. Upon his arrival, he was informed by his 10-year-old grandson, Mi’King, that their neighbour had been displaying a gun to him and other children, as reported by WWBT.

Mi’King recounted the chilling interaction, stating, “My next-door neighbour showed me a gun, and he was showing the gun like… ‘Yeah, I stay strapped.” This revelation prompted Banks to confront the neighbour, identified as 49-year-old Jermorrie Simmons, leading to a heated altercation that tragically escalated into violence.

The situation quickly spiralled out of control, with punches being thrown before Simmons allegedly brandished the gun he had previously shown the children. In the chaos that ensued, Banks was shot and fatally wounded, leaving his family in shock and disbelief.

According to Banks’ fiancée, Shenna, he had only been home for a brief period before the tragic incident occurred. The couple, who had been together for 15 years, were robbed of the opportunity to share a final meal or exchange words before Banks’ untimely passing.

The family is struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of Banks, with his sister-in-law, Celestine Harvey, expressing disbelief, stating, “It just don’t seem real. It seems like a dream, a bad one.” Mi’King, who witnessed the horrific events unfold, echoed similar sentiments, revealing, “It’s impossible for me. Nobody has ever died in my arms before.”

Despite the tragic turn of events, the family shared that they had previously enjoyed positive interactions with Simmons, with Shenna recounting a recent incident where Simmons had come to Banks’ aid when he was choking. This stark contrast in behaviour has left the family grappling with feelings of betrayal and confusion.

The family is struggling to comprehend the shocking turn of events, with Mi’King expressing his disillusionment, stating, “I call him ‘Big Unc,’ and now, he ain’t no Big Unc to me. He no one to me. He’s evil.” Simmons has since been arrested and is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with Banks’ death.
