Three U.S. citizens and a Mexican man charged with smuggling eight individuals in a car after failed attempt to transport them in a trailer

In a recent incident near Rio Rico, three U.S. citizens and a Mexican man have been charged with federal conspiracy for allegedly attempting to smuggle eight foreign nationals into the United States. The accused individuals, Anthony Joseph Gavarone, Harlan Dawson Sorkin, Hector Solis, and Omar Osuna Armenta, were apprehended after border agents witnessed a botched pick-up of unauthorized migrants by a man driving a black pickup truck with a trailer.

Failed Smuggling Attempt

Court records reveal that Hector Solis, identified as the driver of the pickup truck, instructed the migrants to hide under wood, cardboard, and a tarp in the trailer. However, the attempt was foiled when Solis abruptly stopped the vehicle, warning the migrants of Border Patrol presence in the area. Subsequently, Omar Osuna Armenta arrived in a Chrysler 300 sedan to transport the migrants, cramming them into the vehicle, with three women forced to ride in the trunk.

Discovery and Arrest

Border agents followed the Chrysler to a residence near the West Frontage Road of Interstate 19, where Harlan Dawson Sorkin engaged in conversation with the driver. Despite Sorkin’s claims of providing directions, agents discovered two additional undocumented migrants attempting to exit the house. Anthony Joseph Gavarone, another individual at the residence, consented to a search which led to the discovery of the hidden migrants.

Legal Proceedings

Following the arrests, Hector Solis initially denied ownership of the black pickup truck but later confessed. The suspects, including Omar Osuna Armenta, have been charged with conspiracy to transport and harbor illegal aliens. They appeared in federal court on Monday, with depositions scheduled for the five undocumented migrants held as material witnesses in the case.
