Wild Animal Attacks Claim Two Lives in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The menace of wild animal attacks continues to plague various parts of Kerala, with two tragic deaths reported in separate incidents on Tuesday.

One of the victims, a 70-year-old farmer named Palatt Abraham, was fatally gored by a wild gaur near the Kakkayam dam in Kozhikode district. The incident occurred while Abraham was tending to his farm land near the dam. His lifeless body was discovered by another farmer an hour later, and despite efforts to rush him to Kozhikode Medical College hospital, he could not be saved.

The local panchayat officials have raised concerns about the increasing sightings of wild animals, including gaurs, in the area in recent days. They claim to have repeatedly alerted the district administration about the potential risks, but their pleas for action went unheeded.

In a separate incident, a woman named Valsala, wife of a local tribal chief, met a tragic end when she was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Peringalkuthu, Thrissur district. Valsala was collecting forest items when the fatal encounter occurred, and her body was later transferred to Chalakudy Taluk Hospital.

Amidst growing outrage over the lack of preventive measures, Congress activists staged a protest outside Kozhikode Medical College, condemning the district administration’s failure to protect residents from wild animal attacks. The activists even blocked the ambulance carrying Abraham’s body, demanding immediate action and the issuance of orders to eliminate the gaur responsible for the fatal attack.

Following assurances from the district authorities that appropriate steps would be taken, the Congress workers eventually ended their protest, allowing Abraham’s body to be moved to the mortuary for further proceedings.
