One Dead, Several Injured in Tragic Road Accident along Owerri-Ihiala Expressway

Tragedy struck on Tuesday along the Owerri-Ihiala Expressway by the Ihiala Local Government Area secretariat, as one person lost their life and several others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident.

Details of the Accident

The incident, which occurred around noon, involved two vehicles – one belonging to God is Good Logistics and the other a Nissan Caravan commercial bus. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the Ford vehicle was speeding when one of its front tires came off, causing him to lose control and collide with the Nissan in front of him.

Eleven individuals were involved in the crash, including seven male adults and four female adults. Tragically, one male adult lost his life in the accident, while four male adults and four female adults sustained injuries. Fortunately, two people were rescued unhurt.

Cause of the Accident

The acting Sector Public Education Officer of the state Federal Road Safety Corps, Margaret Onabe, confirmed that the probable cause of the fatal crash was attributed to speed and loss of control. She stated, “A commercial driver identified as Francis Basil with a black Ford E-250 bus and a driver of a custom Nissan Caravan commercial bus were involved in a fatal road traffic crash two poles before Ihiala LGA Secretariat by Owerri-Ihiala Expressway today, March 5, 2024, at about 12:00hrs.”
