The Shooting Incident in Chandler, Arizona

Two men were hospitalized after a shooting involving Chandler police, one of whom was a bystander holding an object police mistook for a weapon, officials said. The incident took place at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday in the 3500 block of West Carla Vista, as reported by Interim Police Chief Melissa Deanda at a news conference on Tuesday.

The Events Leading Up to the Shooting

Upon receiving calls about a shooting, officers arrived at the scene where they saw an agitated man with a handgun through a security door. After establishing a perimeter around the house, a neighbour entered the area and disregarded officers’ instructions to leave, according to Deanda.

The Shots Fired

The armed man, later identified as a 59-year-old Chandler resident, came outside and raised his gun, prompting two officers to fire their weapons and hit him multiple times. A third officer, seeing the neighbour holding an object in his hand, perceived a threat and fired, striking the bystander. The nature of the object the bystander was holding has not been disclosed by the police.

Status of the Individuals Involved

Both men involved in the shooting were reported to be in stable condition after the incident. This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
