The incident took place on February 1 when Prince George’s County police responded to a 911 call reporting a breaking and entering at an apartment in the 5100 block of Suitland Road. Officer Braxton Shelton, who was in uniform, arrived at the scene and found the front door unlocked. He proceeded to enter the apartment with his gun drawn.
Upon encountering Jay inside the apartment, Shelton ordered him to show his hands. The body camera footage shows Jay moving towards the kitchen, prompting Shelton to fire a single shot that proved fatal. Jay tragically lost his life in his own home.
Family’s Response
Following the release of the footage, Jay’s family expressed their deep sorrow and disbelief at the events that transpired. In an exclusive interview, Jay’s cousin shared their anguish, stating, “We are hurt. We are just tormented by the video, the fact that we cannot hear him, hug him, say ‘I love you,’ it’s just devastating to all of us.”
