Graphic Body-Worn Camera Footage Released of Deadly Police Shooting in Suitland

In a shocking incident last month in Suitland, Maryland, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office has released graphic body-worn camera footage of a deadly police-involved shooting. The incident occurred on February 1 when Prince George’s County Police responded to a burglary call at an apartment on Suitland Road.

First Officer on Scene

The video shows the first officer on the scene barging through a door that appeared to be already cracked open. Inside, the officer encountered a man and demanded to see his hands. However, the man did not comply and instead walked towards the kitchen, with the officer following closely behind.

Deadly Confrontation

In a split second, the officer fired his gun, striking the victim once in the face. Tragically, the man later succumbed to his injuries. Another man emerged from the bedroom and was ordered to the ground. He identified the person shot as his brother, revealing that they were staying at the location together.

Discovery of Weapons

As backup was called in, officers discovered a loaded handgun in the man’s pocket and a second gun in the kitchen sink. It was later revealed that the man, identified as 31-year-old Melvin Jay, actually lived in the apartment and was not the original 911 caller. The Attorney General’s Office did not disclose the identity of the caller.

Officer’s Response

The involved officer, who has not been publicly identified, radioed for backup and explained that he could not render first aid until the house was fully cleared. The video also captured the officer telling a colleague that the man had run from him and grabbed something in the kitchen.
