A former employee at a central Iowa health care facility is facing charges after she allegedly stole more than $25,000 from residents at the care centre. A manager of the Zearing Health Care Centre reported irregularities with a resident’s bank account in August 2023, leading to an investigation from the Story County Sheriff’s Office. According to the Story County Sheriff’s Office, the ensuing investigation uncovered approximately $23,500 of Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System and Social Security money that was transferred from a resident to an employee, along with approximately $4,500 in unauthorized transactions from three other victims to the same employee between June 2022 and August 2023. All four victims were residents of the Zearing Health Care Centre, according to the Story County Sheriff’s Office. That employee was identified as Bambi Ann Cerka, 44, of Zearing. Cerka was arrested and booked into the Story County Jail on charges of theft and dependent adult abuse.

A former employee at a health care facility in central Iowa is facing legal action after being accused of embezzling over $25,000 from vulnerable residents under her care.

The alarm was raised in August 2023 when a manager at Zearing Health Care Centre noticed suspicious activity in a resident’s bank account, prompting an investigation by the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities discovered that funds amounting to approximately $23,500 from the Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System and Social Security were improperly diverted from a resident to the employee in question. Additionally, around $4,500 in unauthorised transactions were traced to three other victims who were also residents at the health care centre between June 2022 and August 2023.

All four victims affected by the financial misconduct were residents of the Zearing Health Care Centre, as confirmed by the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

The individual responsible for the fraudulent activities has been identified as Bambi Ann Cerka, a 44-year-old resident of Zearing. Cerka was apprehended and taken into custody at the Story County Jail, where she faces charges related to theft and the mistreatment of dependent adults.
