Tensions are running high in Lwabyata Sub-county following the brutal murder of a Kibanja holder who was previously attacked by private security guards on a disputed 5 square mile land in Nakasongola District.

Details of the Incident

The recent escalation of tensions came after the tragic murder of Dan Ssebyala, a resident of Ndaiga Village, by unknown machete-wielding individuals. Reports indicate that Ssebyala was targeted shortly after being warned by a manager on the disputed land to cease cultivation activities.

Sam Kigula, the Nakasongola District LC5 Chairperson, has confirmed that police and other security agencies have been deployed to prevent further mobilization by residents in the area. Kigula expressed concern over the escalating violence and called for intervention from higher authorities to address the land dispute.

Family Accounts

According to family sources, Ssebyala was ambushed and attacked by armed assailants as he made his way home late in the evening. Prior to the attack, Ssebyala had a confrontation with a man identified as Gideon, a manager at Jotham Mafende’s farm, who cautioned him against continuing to work on the disputed land.

Previous Incidents

It was reported that Ssebyala had discovered used cartridges left behind by private security guards who had allegedly attempted to evict him from his home. These guards were said to have been deployed by Mafende, the landlord at the center of the land dispute involving thousands of residents in the area.

Official Statements

RCD Saleh Kamba of Nakasongola urged residents to remain calm as security officials handle the situation and conduct investigations. Previously, the district security committee had disarmed private security guards deployed by Mafende and ordered the arrest of all workers at his farm for non-compliance with registration directives.

Land Dispute Background

The deceased had, in 2023, fenced off what he believed to be his 4-acre land in the ongoing land dispute that has yet to be resolved. The conflict between the Kibanja holders and the alleged landlord has led to a series of violent confrontations and tragic incidents in the area.

As authorities work to restore peace and address the underlying issues, residents of Lwabyata Sub-county remain on edge, fearful of further violence and bloodshed in the midst of the ongoing land dispute.
