Alleged Edmonton City Hall Shooter Faces Terrorism Charges

Authorities have revealed that the individual accused of the recent shooting at Edmonton City Hall was allegedly politically motivated, leading to the laying of terrorism charges against him.

The suspect, identified as Bezhani Sarvar, who is 28 years old, is said to have discharged several rounds from an assault-style rifle and thrown a Molotov cocktail inside the municipal building on January 23.

According to Supt. Glenn Sells, who heads the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), the crime is believed to be politically motivated, with a clear political ideology behind it.

Both INSET and the Edmonton police are currently conducting separate but parallel investigations into the incident.

During a recent press conference, authorities provided limited information on the case. The RCMP stated that they believe the accused acted alone and refrained from commenting further on the suspect’s motivations or ideology.

Additionally, the RCMP did not elaborate on the significance of a manifesto-style video that was reportedly created by the suspect before the shooting. Sells mentioned that the video was part of the investigation but did not offer any further details.

At this stage, discussions on the suspect’s mental health or intentions have been deemed premature by the authorities. Sells expressed gratitude that no injuries were reported during the incident, given the severity of the weapons involved.

Reports indicate that the suspect entered city hall through an underground parkade, where he fired a gun and set off Molotov cocktails, causing a minor fire near an elevator. The gunfire resulted in shattered glass and damaged ceilings and walls, but fortunately, no one was harmed.

After the attack, the suspect dropped the firearm and surrendered to a city hall security guard, who detained him until the police arrived. It was later revealed that the suspect was also a security guard but did not provide personal security at city hall.

Authorities confirmed that an assault-style rifle, three prohibited rifle magazines, 150 rounds of ammunition, and four Molotov cocktails were seized from the scene.

Terrorism Charges and Legal Proceedings

Sarvar is now facing a total of 11 charges related to the city hall attack, including two terrorism-related offences and nine provincial charges with a terrorism perspective.

The terrorism-related charges include counselling the commission of terrorism and possession of property for terrorist purposes. The other nine charges encompass various offences such as causing damage by fire, possession of incendiary material, and firearm-related offences.

Sells noted that laying terrorism charges is a relatively complex process and that such charges are infrequent in Canada. However, in this case, all necessary elements were present for the charges to be filed with the consent of the Attorney General.

As of now, Sarvar is being held in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre, though the exact reasons for his placement there remain unclear.
