Two Men Charged with Murder in Waukegan Shooting Incident

Authorities in Waukegan have announced murder charges against two individuals accused of fatally shooting a man and a woman in a senseless act of violence. The victims were walking down the sidewalk in the 400 block of Powell Avenue when the incident occurred.

Details of the Shooting Incident

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded to a shooting incident around 4:20 p.m. on February 24 in the 400 block of Powell Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered two victims who had sustained gunshot wounds. Rodrigo Olivan, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ana Gil, 24, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition. Tragically, Gil succumbed to her injuries and passed away on Tuesday.

According to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek, Olivan died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Gil’s cause of death was attributed to complications from her gunshot injuries.

Investigation and Arrest of Suspects

Following an intensive investigation, the Waukegan Police Department identified and apprehended two suspects in connection with the double murder. Ishawn Z. Pitts, 19, and Tylo Eddins, 18, were both charged with first-degree murder for their alleged involvement in the incident.

Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain revealed that detectives uncovered a series of criminal activities linked to Eddins and Pitts. Prior to the shooting, Eddins reportedly stole a vehicle from an Uber driver in Chicago at gunpoint. The stolen vehicle was later used in an armed robbery in Waukegan’s South Genesee Street area.

On the day of the fatal shooting, Eddins and Pitts were driving through Powell Avenue when they encountered Olivan and Gil. Eddins fired shots at the victims, prompting Pitts to also open fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of both individuals.

Arrest and Confession

Pitts, who had an existing warrant for aggravated robbery, was taken into custody by Waukegan police detectives. During interrogation, Pitts confessed to his involvement in the shooting incident and provided corroborating details to investigators. Meanwhile, Eddins fled Waukegan but was later arrested in Texas on unrelated charges.

Both suspects are now facing murder charges and await extradition to Illinois to face trial for their alleged crimes. The Waukegan community has been left reeling by the senseless violence that claimed the lives of two innocent individuals, with authorities vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
